Charles Clifford Freeby

November 15, 1929 ~ November 24, 2018 (age 89)

Council Grove - Charles Clifford Freeby, of Council Grove, Kansas, passed away November 24, 2018 at his daughter’s home in Topeka.

He was born November 15, 1929, the son of Leonard and Gertrude (Wahl) Freeby, in Oklahoma City, OK. Charlie graduated from Paxico High School in 1947.  He served in the US Army from 1951 to 1953.

He worked as a bookkeeper for a Chevrolet dealership in Topeka and later managed a Coop grain elevator, feed and grocery store in Alma.  In 1975, while working for the elevator in Alta Vista, Charlie acquired his water supply system operator certificate, and was hired to work for the city of Council Grove, until he retired. After retirement, Charlie was not able to sit around. He accepted a part time job with the city, maintaining public property, painting park benches, managing pesky weeds, and also built a train engine for the playground.  Charlie enjoyed being busy and having something to do.

Charlie was a member and an elder of Council Grove Christian Church.  His church family, teaching Bible study and helping with youth ministries were of the utmost importance to him. He loved his family and friends.  He was always there for anyone who needed him.  Being kind, gentle and understanding were just a few of his many traits.  Caring for others was his calling.

Charlie married Dorothy Jackson in 1956, she preceded him in death in 2001.  He later married Maxine Foster and she preceded him in death in 2011. He was also preceded in death by his parents; daughter Sally Stockman; son LeRoy Heskett; and five siblings.

He is survived by his children;  Dorthy Birdsong of Council Grove, Cynthia Trezza and Veto of Topeka, Jan Freeby and Sunnye of Lonoke, AR, Robert Freeby and Debra of Ft. Smith, AR, Richard Freeby of Winfield, Cindy Freeby of Council Grove, and Ronald Freeby and Randy of Independence, MO. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 8, 2018, at Council Grove Christian Church, with Pastor John Messer officiating.  Inurnment will follow at Sunny Slope Cemetery.
